I live the simple life which allows me to travel very frugally to many parts of the US. Like a Hobo, I work enough to pay my own way and this leaves me with many days to just enjoy life doing what I believe I should be doing in life. While at times, I think it would be great to have a traveling companion, I am single so I am the only one who decides my destination. Well, if you don't have the wanderlust but would really like to live a simple frugal life, you do have options. I have looked at this options for my own life for the time when I get too old to travel anymore.

Your final resting place

Many retirees get older and tire of the full time RV life on the road and opt to purchase a park model RV. These former vagabonds found the place they wanted to settle by being on the road and exploring. So, in the end they returned to stay in their favorite area. With the added costs of staying in one place, how do you manage them on a fixed retirement budget? As many people have realized while in this recession that the amount of their monthly income is going to be lower than they planned for their retirement. At this point, lowering the cost of living is their best chance.

Small houses

There are tiny houses and small houses. A tiny house means an extreme commitment but a small house is both frugal and livable. How do you judge what size house? Look at the size of apartments. If you haven't lived in an apartment for a while, go and visit a few to see what size best fits you. Remember, if you aren't using it each day, you probably don't need to pay for that wasted space. Some small log homesare the size of an apartment. Now, is a good time to start getting rid of those extra items you can live without.

Living where land is cheap

If you want to live frugally on your own land, you will need some inexpensive land and a simple frugal home. The way to find less expensive land and cut your monthly budget is to provide for your own water, electric, and sewer just like you do when you travel around in a self contained home like I do. Today, many full time vagabonds provide their own electricity with solar or wind power, and collect rain water. These sustainable energy sources give you more freedom on the road to decide where you stay. They can also give you more freedom to live where you have always wanted to live.

A sustainable future for you

If you want to help keep those oil spills in the gulf from happening in the future, you have to decrease the amount of oil based products you buy. The best way to do this is to switch to the simple life and start to generate your own sustainable energy. Whether you do that on the road like I do or in a tradition house is up to you.

But I don't know anything about sustainable energy

If you are like most of us, we have heard all the news stories about new alternative energy but we don't have a clue how to get it ourselves. Well, you CAN learn how to do your own. Start with making your own solar panels. The money you save on electricity can be used to finance your next sustainable project like wind power. Soon, after a few simple project successes, you will have the skills to be a self sustaining household. Simple skills for the simple life. Take only what you need and don't waste what you take.

Yes, I am. I like the idea of not being so dependent on things outside and I also like growing my own food. There's something very satisfying about it. Probably thats why I love camping so much - it's close to nature and what you do matters.

Park model rv trailers are great as a green housing alternative.
