Traveling from Oklahoma to New Mexico, the stops include the National Grasslands which were reclaimed after the dust bowl in the 1930s. Today, they are jointly managed with private land owners to recover the land and maintain it. You will find cattle grazing here and oil wells being drilled. In this series of free camping spots, I selected 4 places you can stay for 14 days each. After each 14 day stay, visit a low cost campground with full services to take that long hot shower and recharge your batteries. After your water tank is full, you can travel along to the next boondocking adventure. Two months and you only have to pay for for those 4 nights camping.

If you want to continue on west after this trip, see the Northern New Mexico excursion.

A: Black Kettle Grasslands, Cheyenne Ok

The national grasslands were purchased by the US government and reclaimed from over worked farm land. Like the National Forests they are managed for resources. The grasslands provide the public with hunting, hiking, fishing and camping. You will find wide open spaces for using your solar panels to recharge your batteries while enjoying a leisurely camping experiences here in the plains. The grasslands are home to deer, turkey, beavers, bald eagles, and Monarch butterflies. Grasslands are also open to cattle and drilling so expect to see a few of those around when  you visit.

9 miles N of Cheyenne, OK, there is a campground in the Black Kettle National Grasslands. It is called Black Kettle Campground.

B: Lake Meredith National Recreation Area

Lake Meredith was created in the panhandle of Texas to supply water to the local communities. You will find hiking around the lake and great fishing in it. Horseback riding is popular in the area along with hunting for whitetail and mule deer, dove, turkey, quail, duck, pheasant, and geese. If you have a canoe or other water craft, the lake will provide many hours of boating fun. In the area, you will find the Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument and Palo Duro Canyon State Park which is called the "Grand Canyon of Texas"

Dispersed camping along the Lake or in a campsite Fritch Fortress campsite is located about 3.5 miles out of Fritch on Fritch Fortress Road.

This is another example of National Grasslands found in the plains states that were recovered from the dust bowl days. Grasslands are a patchwork group of lands bought so be sure you get a map so you know you aren't on private land. The grasslands are open for hunting, camping, and hiking. If you like bird watching, you will find plenty here. Relaxation on the prairie in the ticket here in the grasslands. So enjoy a little respite on your way to your final destination or just recharge your own batteries.
